Kauri Coast
Take a trip to the rugged Kauri Coast and you won't be disappointed. The West Coast beaches are wild and sand-swept, and you can kite-surf, dig for Tua Tua (a New Zealand shellfish), go hang gliding, or try your hand at 'sailing' a land yacht.
The Kauri Coast is full of friendly locals, and has some great places to eat (Flying Solo recommends the fish burgers at the Funky Fish cafe, Bayley's Beach). Waipoua Forest is home to the giant Kauri tree called 'Tane Mahuta' (God of the forest), and wandering along the Waipoua forest walkway is the best way to get up close to the ancient giant, and get in amongst the beautiful New Zealand native bush.
Flying Solo can take you right round the Kauri Coast, stopping by all the sights along the way that make this part of New Zealand such a unique and 'untouched' place to explore.
